HORMONAL CONDITIONS
Herbal medicine is incredibly effective at improving hormonal health and is used for countless aspects of the reproductive system and hormone-related conditions.
Below are some of the conditions we commonly treat.
PERIOD PAIN | PMS | PMDD
Common doesn’t equal normal. Many women don’t realise that a simple hormonal imbalance can be largely to blame for extreme and life-impacting period-related symptoms such as pain, heavy bleeding, irregular periods and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). With so many symptoms deemed ‘normal’ it can be difficult to know whether what you go through each month is actually normal.
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a much more severe form of PMS. It is a diagnosable condition that causes severe mood shifts and can disrupt daily life, including putting pressure on relationships, irritability, anger, depression and anxiety, in the week or two before menstruation. It is estimated around 20% of women worldwide suffer from PMDD.
Her Herbs can help you identify underlying issues and ease symptoms, creating sustainable changes that genuinely improve your quality of life. The natural approach includes introducing herbal medicine, specific nutrition advice and lifestyle techniques to support the process of balancing hormones and reduce the severity of symptoms.
During your complimentary consultation, Her Herbs will build you a custom roadmap for implementing each of these elements to reach your wellness goals.
BV, THRUSH + UTI’S
There is a delicate balance of microorganisms, known as the vaginal microbiome, that keeps the vagina and the whole body healthy and flourishing. Bacterial vaginosis (BV), thrush and urinary tract infections (UTIs) are all caused by an imbalance in this microbiome.
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) occurs due to a change in the vaginal flora, moving away from the lactobacillus species and towards those that are less desirable. Some women may be asymptomatic, however others can experience itching, grey-white or blood stained discharge, and a fish-like odour from the vagina. BV can be a risk factor for other conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), post gynaecological surgical infections or acquiring a sexually transmitted infection (STI).
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are diagnosed when there is the presence of white blood cells and bacteria in the urine above a normal count. UTIs can result in bacteria travelling to the bladder (cystitis) and kidneys (pyelonephritis). 50-60% of women experience UTIs in their lifetime, however symptoms can still occur despite normal test results, leading to misdiagnosis.
Thrush is a common fungal infection that can occur in the vagina. Approximately 75% of women experience thrush during their lifetime, which causes rashes, irritation, itching and a white discharge.
Natural medicine supports the body’s immune system and reduces the overgrowth of bacteria and fungi within the vaginal microbiome. BV, thrush and UTIs can be eliminated or become asymptomatic through naturopathic support.
ENDOMETRIOSIS + ADENOMYOSIS
Endometriosis is a common condition that occurs when tissue from the lining of the uterus becomes displaced throughout the body. Misplaced endometrial cells continue to respond to the hormonal fluctuations of your menstrual cycle, which cause pain, bloating and bleeding outside the uterus. Endometriosis symptoms can widely affect everyday activities and significantly reduce quality of life.
Adenomyosis is not dissimilar to endometriosis. It occurs when endometrial tissue grows not only on the inner lining of the uterus as it should, but also within the uterine wall. This process causes the uterus to enlarge to a significant size and the displaced tissue responds to normal hormonal fluctuations, as with endometriosis. The displaced tissue thickens, breaks down and bleeds during each menstrual cycle, creating symptoms that can be difficult to manage.
Herbal medicine can help treat endometriosis and adenomyosis by supporting the immune system, gut health, detoxification pathways, balancing reproductive hormones and reducing systemic inflammation. Natural treatment for these conditions often results in immense improvement for levels of pain and the unpredictability that is synonymous with endometriosis and adenomyosis.
Naturopathic care, nutritional changes and healthy lifestyle habits such as regular exercise, mindfulness and stress management techniques can help reduce debilitating symptoms of endometriosis and adenomyosis. These improvements are within reach for all women and your naturopath will ensure the adjustments required are attainable for you.
UTERINE FIBROIDS
Fibroids are non-cancerous tumours in the uterus made up of uterine muscle fibres. They affect roughly one in five women, appearing most commonly in women over the age of 35. Fibroids vary greatly in size and location and can only be diagnosed via ultrasound with a gynaecologist.
Some women may not be aware they have fibroids until they are discovered during a routine or pre-natal scan, as they are often asymptomatic. However, when they are causing concern, natural medicine can assist in managing their presence and symptoms.
Following menopause, fibroids will often shrink due to reduced oestrogen in the body. Natural medicine can help balance hormones, modulating oestrogen and progesterone, to reduce fibroids. A nutrient rich, anti-inflammatory diet, along with healthy lifestyle habits and appropriate exercise can also help to support fibroid reduction.
Her Herbs customises herbal formulas to support the reduction of fibroids and their symptoms. We also provide naturopathic care and wider support to achieve a healthier balance of your hormones, more regular periods, lighter bleeding and reduced pain.
POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME (PCOS)
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) typically manifests with a combination of symptoms, including infertility, irregular periods, anovulation (failure to ovulate), irregular ovulation, excessive hair growth, hormonal acne and metabolic dysfunction. PCOS is driven by a hormonal imbalance, predominantly excessive androgens. It is the collection of these symptoms that creates the syndrome, rather than the presence of cysts on the ovaries alone.
A main driving force of PCOS is insulin resistance, meaning there are higher levels of glucose circulating in the blood. Customised herbal formulas can help improve insulin sensitivity, menstrual cycle irregularity, whilst lowering androgen levels and improving ovulation. Nutrition is also a key component in PCOS treatment. A therapeutic diet may increase the body’s ability to respond to insulin, reducing the levels of glucose circulating in your blood.
Her Herbs addresses your unique and complete health picture. Your naturopath will discuss with you the importance of healthy lifestyle habits such as regular exercise, mindfulness and stress management techniques to optimise your results for a better balance of hormones, more regular periods, healthier ovulation, clearer skin and reduced hirsutism.
